When it was released in 1999 it wasn’t universally panned or hit with extremely harsh criticism -but people really were not kind to it, the reception was at best lukewarm. Over time criticism got a little more intense for some reason with the album ending up on “top worst of this or that” lists.
At the time and even more so now – I couldn’t disagree more.
Most of the tracks that many people derided as “inside hipster jokes” were in fact vibrant classics. I saw Beck perform “Debra” last year and it brought the house down.
This is in fact one of my favorite Beck albums – and I love Beck.
